Within less than 5 months after completing chemotherapy, I joined a program called Cancer To 5K in March 2013.
I went to a community center near my house and found a brochure for this program. Cancer To 5K is a free 12-week training program for cancer survivors to run a 5K road race. The program is funded by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. The experience was probably the best experience of my life! I got to meet 7 amazing cancer survivors, along with many great Sherpa's (volunteers), and of course 2 of the best coaches. I also got to meet the current record holder for the fastest 5K race time of the Cancer To 5K program and the founder of the Cancer To 5K program! Everyone was so nice. My first ever 5K was the Mercy Health Clinic 5K. The Mercy Health Clinic 5k was on the 1 year anniversary of finding my cancerous tumor. The route of this race was also very special because it went past the hospital where I had my surgery as well as the building where I had my chemo.
The PurpleStride 5K was the goal race for the Fall 2013 season of Cancer To 5K. I ended up getting a great race time and am now currently the official record holder of the Cancer To 5K program for the fastest 5K finishing time for a survivor!
